The lineup for the 2010 Bonnaroo Festival is very slowly rolling out as artists playing the Manchester, Tennessee fest are revealing the news via Twitter, MySpace and their official Websites. It’s all part of the Internet-wide global “virtual event” that organizers planned to drum up excitement for this year’s fest, which will take place June 10th to 13th. Tickets for the festival went go on sale at 12 p.m. EST at the official Bonnaroo Website. throughout the day, the Bonnaroo MySpace page revealed the artists playing this year’s fest one-by-one, with the last addition to the lineup, Stevie wonder, announced just before 9 p.m. EST. the full lineup is below.

After weeks of speculation, it was revealed that Jay-Z would be among the headliners at the 2010 fest. Hova will also headline at the Coachella festival in April. Dave Matthews Band, Stevie wonder and Kings of Leon were also named Bonnaroo headliners. Phoenix were the first band to “officially” announce they’ll be performing Bonnaroo, with Weezer coming in a close second. Jeff Beck, John Fogerty, OK go, Martin Medeski & Wood and the Avett Brothers also confirmed they’ll be on hand. as Rolling Stone previously reported, the Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne accidentally let slip that his band will perform Pink Floyd’s The Dark side of the Moon during a late-night set, while still-unconfirmed reports named Paul Simon as a potential headliner, which proved to be false as of now. Dave Matthews Band left a long gap in his summer touring schedule around the festival, and the band’s slot on the lineup was confirmed three hours into the announcement rollout. to celebrate his headlining gig at Bonnaroo, Matthews drew a little cartoon on his iPhone marking the announcement. Watch it below:

This “virtual event,” however, has opened the window for unknown bands and people who aren’t even musicians to tweet that they are included in the lineup. Keep it tuned all day to Rolling Stone as we sift through the truth and the fiction while updating the official Bonnaroo lineup as it is announced.

Hard Rock Cafe in Seattle opens Wednesday

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

It’s official: the Hard Rock Cafe in Seattle is set to open on Wednesday.

More photos here. Monday morning the internationally-famous chain opened its doors to media at a preview event where the new restaurant showed off its very stylish, “rustic refined” look. Walking in rather early on a Monday morning I saw workers rushing to set up and put other finishing touches. I imagined everything was kind of like one of those reality shows where employees are freaking out as they pull off the last pieces of painter’s tape and patrons walk in.

That said, the place looks great. Inside you’ll find vintage-style wood complemented by a brown and black color scheme. Soft lighting sets a mood that makes stepping outside into the gray, overcast kind of painful.

Also: See photos from when the guitar went up

See more of the memorabilia in the store.

One thing you’ll notice is that this Hard Rock is definitely a product of the iPhone age, with touchscreens everywhere. There’s a vertical panel showing off memorabilia in the waiting area and a little bit farther by the bar is a Microsoft Surface table. the demo for this was pretty interesting – it had music performance photos, videos, games and a touchscreen piano. I could easily see people drinking beers or cocktails while sitting near this island playing a fun matching game similar to what you already see in bars now. the difference being that this is a big, beautiful multi-touch screen, so you don’t have to crowd around.

The booths have touchscreens too. Like the others they have access to memorabilia but also give diners the ability to vote on music to be played.

Upstairs there is a bigger, square bar and dining tables surround a raised stage where bands will play. upon entering the Black Eyed Peas “I Gotta Feeling” was playing but later staff could be heard singing along to Pearl Jam.

So far, it had been everything I was expecting of a Hard Rock Cafe. it was only when we were taken up to the rooftop lounge area that I got excited. with modern couches surrounding gas fire places, an outside bar and a view of the Pike Place Market, it was actually a pretty hip spot.

I joked with Amy Bauer, the restaurant’s marketing manager, mentioning Seattle’s tendency to be, well you know, rainy. she laughed and told me they had tents.

But as preliminary comments on this post and talk I’ve heard already indicate, some Seattlites are skeptical of the place’s success.

It’s location near the Market doesn’t seem to be coincidence, as the giant, upside-down blue guitar hanging outside is sure to catch the eye of wandering tourists. but as the cafe is soliciting local bands, it seems it wants to attract local music-lovers.

It’s been a topic of conversation among locals already, wondering if it will be like Planet Hollywood, which opened in 1996 and shut down in 2001 after going bankrupt.

Be sure to check out the photos in our gallery. the restaurant opens on Wednesday at 116 Pike St.

Stephen Colbert Remixed Against His Wishes

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

When copyright reform advocate and Creative Commons founder Lawrence Lessig appeared on the Stephen Colbert Report last week to promote his new book, Remix: Making Art and Commerce Thrive in the Hybrid Economy, he argued that all the last ten years of music- and video-related copyright battles have done is “turn our kids into criminals.”

Instead, Lessig argues, companies need to embrace what he calls the “hybrid economy,” in which business can be build on top of freely-sharable material. think Flickr. we regularly make use of Flickr photos on this website without paying for them, under a Creative Commons license. Photographers get the attribution they asked for, we get a photo to use and Flickr gets to sell ads based on the traffic.

Colbert, of course, wasn’t buying it. He sternly forbade the remixing of the interview by his faithful legion, the “Colbert nation.”

“I will be very angry — and possibly litigious — if anyone takes this interview right here and remix[es] it with some great dance beat, and it starts showing up in clubs across the country,” said Colbert, tongue planted firmly in cheek.

Ask and ye shall receive. Remixes of the interview are appearing on the Creative Commons’ ccmixter website Lessig helped set up as well as on the official Stephen Colbert forum.

Here are three of the more recent ones:

MC Jack In the Box – “Reframe the Debate”:

JohnnyValet – “Mouth of Madness Memix”:

EmJay Featuring Stephen Colbert – “Artistic Socialism”:

One one level, this is all fun and games, but on another, it’s serious stuff, even though voters apparently don’t care enough about copyright to vote based on a candidate’s copyright policy (based on interviews with Pete Ashdown and Rep. Rick Boucher, D-VA).

But according to Lessig, Congress has voted on copyright issues ten times over the past ten years. Clearly, it wouldn’t be out of the question to reform copyright laws so that they make more sense to consumers, copyright holders and start-ups.

For too many in the last category, launching a new business is still a matter of “ask for licensing,” in which case they lose valuable time and risk having their features restricted, or “ask for forgiveness,” in which case the start-up does whatever it wants, then hires a team of lawyers when copyright holders start filing suits. neither option is idea. From that vantage point, Lessig’s claim that Congress needs to reform copyright makes a lot of sense.
